Playdate on the Greenway Morrison Nature Center
This month we will visit Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch located right on the Sand Creek Greenway! Join us for a special program where we will meet ambassador animals and go on a nature walk. Spots are limited and will fill up fast! Registration required.
¡Este mes visitaremos “The Morrison Nature Center, en Star K Ranch” un centro educativo sobre la naturaleza ubicado por la vía verde de Sand Creek! Participa en un programa especial en el que conoceremos a los animales embajadores y daremos un paseo por la naturaleza. This will be a continuous Free Family Program in 2025, held once a month, on the second Saturday of the month.
Open to all ages and abilities.
Interpretation and transportation services are available upon request (please give us at least a 48-hour notice). Please indicate if you require these services in the registration form below.
Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required to help with planning purposes.

Nature Photography: Scavenger Hunt
Embark on a fun photo scavenger hunt with SCRGP staff and local professional photography Lauren Keller to capture the wonders of the outdoors! We will be visiting Morrison Nature Center at the site to learn more about the natural landscape of this area and find out what unique plants, animals, and non-living things you can find in the early Spring.
The SCRGP has five DSLR cameras available for participants to use during programming. The first 5 people to sign up will get access to these cameras. If you have your own camera and would like to participate you are welcome to as well!
Embárcate en una divertida búsqueda del tesoro fotográfico con el personal del SCRGP y la fotógrafa profesional local Lauren Keller para capturar las maravillas de la naturaleza. Celebrate Black Birders Week this year with the SCRGP and Denver Audubon! Started by a group of black nature enthusiasts and biologists from the Black AF in STEM collective, this week is aimed at creating and encouraging greater diverse representation in the world of birding. Join us in celebrating by heading out on the trail for a relaxing and rejuvenating bird walk.

Nature Journaling: Pollinators and Charcoal Drawing
Decorate your own nature journal provided by us! Join SCRGP staff and local artist Faith Williams to learn how to use charcoal to create unique drawings of the local pollinators we can find at our pollinator garden in Commerce City. No previous art experience required. We will provide a nature journal to each participant with all necessary supplies to decorate.

Nature Photography: BioBlitz
Join SCRGP for a BioBlitz and Nature Photography program! A BioBlitz is an event when scientists, naturalists, and community members work together over a short time period to identify and record species of plants, animals, fungi, and other living organisms in a certain location. Learn how to use your camera to take photos of the living and non-living things that make up our Sand Creek community while helping us collect data.

Aquatic Macroinvertebrates: Water Bugs
Join SCRGP staff and water expert Jordan Parmen (Metro Water Recovery) to become a community scientist! Help us collect and identify the bugs who live in the Sand Creek. To get a more detailed picture of the aquatic life in the creek, the samples we take will be sent to RiverWatch, a statewide volunteer water quality monitoring program that the SCRGP is a part of.

Pick up a camera, get outside, and join the SCRGP and local photographer Lauren Keller for a fun morning of taking pictures of miniature creatures along the Greenway.
The SCRGP has five DSLR cameras available for participants to use during programming. The first 5 people to sign up will get access to these cameras. If you have your own camera and would like to participate you are welcome to as well!

Come out to the Greenway to join SCRGP as we partner with Nature’s Educators to provide a live bird presentation and bird walk. Learn about and interact with three hawks and then head out onto the trail to see if we can spot any birds in-action along the Sand Creek.

This month we will visit The Urban Farm, a community farm and educational center located right on the Sand Creek Greenway! Join on us on a bilingual Farm Tour (Spanish) and met the wonderful animals that call this farm home. This special event includes FREE admission. Spots are limited and will fill up fast! Join SCRGP for one of our two volunteer days in February! We will be cleaning up trash in Commerce City and are so excited to kick start our 2025 volunteer season with you all! 2024 Volunteer Appreciation Day
Join the SCRGP community in celebrating our 2024 volunteer efforts! This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our volunteer program and celebrate the outstanding volunteers from this year’s projects. We thank Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK) for graciously offering their space to hold this celebration, and offering an opportunity to learn more about who they are!
This event will hold a special feature guest, food, drinks, an overview of this year’s volunteer achievements, as well as individual awards to our most outstanding volunteers and corporate groups that have shown dedication to enhancing the Sand Creek Greenway.
Please consider joining if you have not yet volunteered with SCRGP, as this will be a great showcase of our volunteer program, the work that we support, and the values that we share through supporting our local communities.

Biking + Birding on The Greenway!
Join The SCRGP and Bikes Together for a fun-filled morning of learning basic bike maintenance and then biking + birding along ~ 2.6 miles (~5.2 round trip) of the beautiful Sand Creek Regional Greenway! All ages welcome! We will start the day with an optional opportunity to tune up your bike from 8am-9am (+ learn some basic bike maintenance tips!), start the ride around 9:30am, stop at approximately half-mile intervals to bird, and end the ride at The Morrison Nature Center @ Star K Ranch in Aurora (address - 16002 E Smith Rd, Aurora, CO 80011).
After we arrive at Star K Ranch, there will be an option to ride back to the meeting spot, continue birding at Star K Ranch, or to arrange your own transportation from Star K Ranch back to your car/homes.
Coffee, water, and snacks will be provided at the start of the event, but we advise folks to come prepared with their own day pack for any extra water, snacks, sunscreen/bug spray, etc. that they need to be successful! We are happy to offer transportation services and translation services upon request (before 9/30). Spots are limited, and registration is required to attend this event.

Coffee On The Greenway
Join SCRGP at the Bluff Lake Nature Center where we will be giving out FREE COFFEE and engaging in conversation with trail users! This is a great way to get to know more about who we are, upcoming programs that we offer, and express any questions or concerns that you might have.
September Volunteer Workday
Join the SCRGP for the September 2024 volunteer workday at Smith Road Trailhead! We will be removing trash and invasive weeds by the creek to improve wildlife habitat and clean our waterways. Please wear closed toed shoes and long pants as we will be working in tall grass along the creek.
Our volunteers are immensely helpful in making sure the Greenway is the wonderful community resource it is today. Come out and join us! Specific project details will be sent out to registered participants via email before the event.

This will be a continuous program, held once a month, on the fourth Saturday of the month (May-December 2024).
Open to all ages and abilities. Interpretation and transportation services are available upon request (please give us at least a 48-hour notice). Please indicate if you require these services in the registration form below.
Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is not required but is highly encouraged (to help with food planning).

Greenway Guardians End of Project Celebration!
Do you live in Commerce City? We want to amplify your voice! Join a group of young stewards (ages 10-17) who will work together to inform the SCRGP on the creation and installation of a temporary sculpture in Commerce City made out of trash collected from the Sand Creek Greenway! This will be a unique project focused on educating the community on the environmental and community impacts of littering. Uplifting youth voices in Commerce City is important to us as we embark on this project and we would love for you to join us!
¿Vives en Commerce City? ¡Queremos amplificar tu voz! ¡Únase a un grupo de jóvenes mayordomos (de 10 a 17 años) que trabajarán juntos para informar al SCRGP sobre la creación e instalación de una escultura temporal en Commerce City hecha completamente de basura recolectada de la Vía Verde de Sand Creek! Este será un proyecto único enfocado en educar a la comunidad sobre los impactos ambientales y comunitarios de tirar basura. ¡Elevar las voces de los jóvenes en Commerce City es importante para nosotros a medida que nos embarcamos en este proyecto y nos encantaría que se uniera a nosotros!
Through monthly meetings, February through September 2024 at Eagle Point Recreation Center and on the Greenway, you will help with sculpture concept/design by creating a Request for Proposal (RFP) that will be shared with the public, selecting an artist, collecting sculpture materials, and engaging the community in the project. After the first initial orientation meeting (Thursday February 22, 5:30pm-7pm) all meeting times and dates will be decided upon by youth to accommodate schedules. Meeting dates and times are below. Although the project has already started we are still recruiting youth and would love for you to join us!
A través de reuniones mensuales, de febrero a septiembre de 2024 en el Centro Recreativo de Eagle Point, ayudará con el concepto/diseño de la escultura mediante la creación de una Solicitud de Propuesta (RFP) que se compartirá con el público, la selección de un artista, la recolección de materiales de escultura y la participación de la comunidad en el proyecto. Después de la primera reunión de orientación inicial (martes 9 de enero, 5:30 pm a 7:00 pm), todos los horarios y fechas de las reuniones serán decididos por los jóvenes para adaptarse a los horarios. Water and Us: Watersheds, water bugs, and fishing! / ¡El agua y nosotros: cuencas hidrográficas, insectos acuáticos y pesca!
Join the SCRGP and special guest Eeland Stribling for a morning of fun learning about all things water! Learn how to fish…catch water bugs…become a community scientist by helping us test the health of the Sand Creek…and participate in a creek clean-up!
Don’t have your own fishing pole? Don’t worry, all supplies will be provided! Program will start with a trash clean-up in and around the Sand Creek followed by fun hands-on activities led by Eeland Stribling and SCRGP staff. Eeland is a comedian, storyteller, wildlife enthusiast, and educator focused on bringing the wonderful sport of fishing to a broad range of communities. The SCRGP is thrilled to work with Eeland to bring you the opportunity to try your hand at fishing! No previous experience necessary.
Please come prepared to get wet. If you would like to get into the creek please bring water shoes or other shoes you don’t mind getting wet!
